    In September 2015 I paid £55 to have my curtains dry cleaned at the Keynsham branch of Smarty dry cleaners. My curtains were not ready on the day they were due for collection as only one curtain had been returned to the store.

    After I had collected my curtains, I contacted the store to complain as my curtains had shrunk (this was very visible as the liner was now longer than the curtain).The curtains also had a watermark which the sales assistant had assured me would fade but instead the watermark had not faded and was just as visible as it was prior to the dry clean. I returned to the store with my curtains as the dry cleaners had requested to speak to the owner to resolve the situation. After waiting for forty minutes I was informed that the owner was now not coming to the Keynsham store. This wasted my time, petrol and car parking fee.

    I then received a phone call from the owner. She went into detail about the method they used to clean my curtains and how this was following the manufacturers instructions as specified in the label on my curtains. Therefore any shrinkage was the manufacturers fault and not the dry cleaners. Though the owner suggested that as the curtains are two years old I would be unlikely to get a refund from the shop where I purchased them.

    Regarding the watermark: Although the sales assistant had clearly stated that the watermark would fade, the owner reported that there is a sign in the store that was not pointed out. The sign apparently states the dry cleaners terms and conditions which specify that they cannot guarantee stain removal. Apparently this sign has proved to be legally valid when previous customers have tried to take the dry cleaners to court. I did not notice the sign in the store and the sales assistant did not verbally inform me of the terms and conditions or make me aware of the sign. The owner reported that it is unrealistic to expect the sales assistant to make customers aware of the sign or verbally inform customers of the dry cleaners terms and conditions due to pressures on the sales assistant’s time caused by queuing customers. However, I was the only customer in the store when I was served. The owner said a refund would not be offered because, in her opinion, the dry cleaners had done nothing wrong. She offered to clean my curtains again with the risk that the curtains may shrink again.

    I will never use Smarty dry cleaners again due to their time wasting, poor customer service and poor cleaning.
